The Auschwitz concentration camp, known as Nazi extermination camp during the Second World War 1940-1945, under the German name of Auschwitz-Birkenau. It consisted of three camps: Auschwitz in Oswiecim, Auschwitz II in Birkenau and Auschwitz III Monowitz. In 1947, the camp was transformed into the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, since 1979 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine, constructed in the 13th century, contains an entire town below the ground with a sanatorium, theatre, church and café!

The Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa is the most famous Polish shrine to the Virgin Mary and the country's greatest place of pilgrimage – for many its spiritual capital.
